9to9 Girls: meet Emily T.
9to9 Girls is a new section and short portraits of strong and creative women who have all, in their own rights and on their own terms defined what a successful life was to them.
I met Emily earlier this year at a ladies brunch I was hosting. She came in big smiles, bright pink pants and a chilled bottle of crisp Napa Chardonnay in hands. I was charmed. I remember her leaving eventually for a running race she had signed herself to later on the day, and feeling wowed by her charisma and energy. But it’s really when spending quality time together that I fell for her authenticity and honesty. She embodies the idea that you can be a power girl, you can be confident and self-aware and yet bring vulnerability to the table and live your truth. And that is her. Ex pro golfer, Em was raised in sunny Napa, California; was educated in Colorado where she met her now husband and moved to Norway two years ago to follow her man and follow her dreams. After a career shift, she now works as the CMO for a cool outdoor adventures start-up in Oslo. Her character is full of life, full of wisdom and oozing kindness. Her interview is so inspirational to me and should be for you too. Thanks again for doing this!
Where can we find you on Instagram?
What is the thing you love most about yourself?
My enthusiasm towards everything. Life, friends, dreams, new adventures, ice cream. The list goes on.
What holds you back in life?
Fear of what people think. It has plagued me for as long as I can remember. I feel its grip loosening in the last years but it still pops up when I least need it to.
What advice would you give your 23 year old self?
(see above….ha!) I would tell myself to not care so much about outside opinions. Throw yourself into whatever it is you love and not care what the nay-sayers come back with. You will be able to achieve incredible things, better than you could ever imagine in the next years to come, so just keep your head on straight and keep pushing. There isn’t one right way to live your life, respond to opinions, or even swing a golf club. Know what is right in YOUR heart and just go for it.
´My life is successful because...´
I have an incredibly supportive and loving family, a good head on my shoulders, and a ton of competitiveness in my blood.
What is always in your bag from 9 to 9?
So, first of all, my “bag” is most often a “backpack”. I am all about practicality and a one shoulder purse can cause some issues (from personal experience) while riding my bike around the city! But today, I have my tote bag and in it you’ll definitely find my regular essentials: wallet, phone, headphones (maybe even a spare set), Burt's bees and Kiehls lip balms, and my Chanel rouge coco lipstick. (I am new to the lipstick game but when I jumped in, I went ALL in and this one is BRIGHT). The other musts: Tom’s sunglasses, Kindle full of new books, and today (Friday) I picked up the Norwegian newspaper, Aftenposten off the front step on the way to work. Last but not least, my trusty journal. This thing is my companion through thick and thin. It is so helpful to jot down some ideas, memories, anxieties, and just a great place to get out of my own way.
What did you dream to become growing up?
I don’t honestly remember what I wanted to become when I was very young. I have been totally, 100% focused on sports for as long as I have been alive, so it was probably between a professional tennis player or downhill skier. Later on, I do remember telling my dad that I wasn’t so keen on becoming a CEO and I would rather be a mom. And he responded saying that is one of the most honorable jobs in the world. That response rocked and is so true.
What is women empowerment to you?
Being able to be in any place, at any function, in any situation and be listened to, respected, and admired. To be respected for our physical differences as women but treated as equals.
3 women who have marked your life and why
My sister, mom, and Sara Blakely.
My sister has never apologized for living life on her own terms. It is refreshing and inspiring. She does what she wants, works her butt off, and enjoys what life presents to her. And she has been my biggest supporter through all the hurdles that professional sports brought me. And then when I was changing my career, she was my biggest cheerleader yet again.
My mom makes being a parent look like a blast and I cannot wait to handle motherhood with class and enjoyment as she did. She and my dad raised my sister and I to be independent, strong, and extremely outgoing adults and I can’t wait to instill those same qualities in my children one day!
Sara Blakely - she is the world-rocking entrepreneur, founder of Spanx, and an inspiring mom of FOUR! She is successful for believing in herself, her product, and not giving up even after all of the no’s, unanswered phone calls, and slammed doors. Her enthusiasm is contagious and it just shows that a positive and outgoing attitude can take you places.
How do you create your own space, your personal chamber?
My ideal “personal chamber” is coming back from a tough work-out, hopping in a steaming shower, and climbing into fresh, clean sheets with a book in hand. Wrapped up in a down-comforter and getting lost in a book is the absolute best feeling.
What is your self-care routine?
Mental self care: getting out my journal and jotting down my thoughts/worries/wishes down on paper has become my all-time stress reliever. I bring my journal with me everywhere and it is truly amazing what happens when you get these emotions down on paper and out of your head.
Physical self-care: going for a jog with a podcast in my ear OR if I really need a good sweat, it´s running intervals. 30 seconds on. 30 seconds off. Do it 20 times, as fast as you can! (Warm up before, of course!)
Thank you so much to Emily for her inspiring, honest, raw answers. You brought me to tears.
